Multiple online sellers on Amazon are selling merchandise with the phrase "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," which has been labeled antisemitic by Jewish groups and condemned by the White House.
The multinational technology company has a policy regarding controversial products on its website, citing that it "prohibits the sale of products that promote, incite, or glorify hatred, violence, racial, sexual, or religious intolerance or promote organizations with such views, as well as listings that graphically portray violence or victims of violence."
T-shirts and hoodies with the phrase can be found on Amazon in both men and women's sizes.
The phrase "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," has been labeled by the The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) as an "antisemitic slogan" due to it "denying the Jewish right to self-determination, including through the removal of Jews from their ancestral homeland," according to Newsweek.
The American Jewish Committee has called the phrase antisemitic.
The White House has also condemned the use of that phrase, shortly after Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib D-Mi. was censured by the House, following her comments over the Israel-Hamas war.
“We’ve been, you know, we’ve been clear,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during a press conference Wednesday. “You’ve heard from members of [the National Security Council] … that when it comes to the phrase that was used, ‘From [the] river to the sea,’ it is divisive. It is hurtful to many — many find it hurtful and also many find it antisemitic. And so obviously, we categorically reject applying the term to this conflict.”
Tlaib referred to the phrase on the social media platform X as "an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate."
Amazon has not responded to requests for comment at this time.
Amid the Israel-Hamas war, there have been different groups and government organizations that have not condemned Hamas or called it a terrorist organization.
Earlier this month, the United Nations failed to pass an amendment to condemn Hamas following the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has also gotten pushback for refusing to state its belief over whether or not Hamas is a terrorist organization.
"The SPLC lists only domestic hate and anti-government extremist groups — those based in and focused on organizing in the United States," the group told Just the News in a statement. "We do not designate terrorist organizations."
