The Biden administration released a statement on Monday opposing a GOP-led bill that requires voters to prove their citizenship in the United States in order to vote in federal elections.
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act was introduced by Texas Rep. Chip Roy, a Republican, earlier this year and could come up for a House vote this week, according to the Daily Wire.
The Biden administration argued that the bill is redundant because it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections, and punishable by prison time or fines.
“The alleged justification for this bill is based on easily disproven falsehoods,” the statement said. “Additionally, making a false claim of citizenship or unlawfully voting in an election is punishable by removal from the United States and a permanent bar to admission.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson has also pushed the House to pass the bill and railed against President Joe Biden in a statement on Monday for threatening to veto the legislation.
"It should alarm every American citizen that the sitting President of the United States, who has opened our border to over 9 million illegals, just announced that he would veto our bill to prevent noncitizens from voting," the speaker posted to X.
