On Tuesday, Lisa joined former New York Congressman Michael Grimm to discuss the current situation in Ukraine.
In late August, Ukraine executed a counter offensive against Russian positions in the Northeast and South of the country. By Tuesday, Ukraine claimed to have retaken over 2,400 square miles of formerly occupied territory including the town of Vovchansk, which is just two miles from the Russian border.
Reports have also indicated that Russian forces were taken by surprise by the ferocity of the new offensive and have engaged in a chaotic withdrawal, while suffering substantial casualties.
While Russia has acknowledged redeploying soldiers from two areas in the Kharkiv region, Kremlin spokespersons have been offering very few specifics. Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov has told reporters, “The special military operation continues and will continue until all the goals that were originally set are achieved.”
The current Ukrainian offensive has created rare public criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin by government officials. In one instance, members of a District Council in Putin’s hometown of St. Petersburg have called for the Russian President to be tried for treason.
