New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez this week warned President Joe Biden against pursuing executive actions to tighten asylum rules or otherwise limit border crossings, defending the right of foreigners to seek asylum.
Reports emerged this week that Biden was mulling executive actions, including limiting asylum eligibility to aliens arriving at ports of entry and raising the "credible fear standard" for seeking such status.
"Doing Trump impressions isn’t how we beat Trump. Seeking asylum is a legal right of all people. In the face of authoritarian threat, we should not buckle on our principles - we should commit to them. The mere suggestion is outrageous and the President should refuse to sign it," Ocasio-Cortez posted on X.
The rumored moves have also prompted skepticism from Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, who has called on Biden to show his sincerity by reinstituting former President Donald Trump's "Remain in Mexico" policy.
Biden has not, thus far, announced any specific moves.
