Florida Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz on Friday said that he was notified by local police in his district on Monday about an alleged threat on his life and that an investigation into the alleged plot is still ongoing.
The Margate Police Department confirmed that an arrest has been made in connection with the plot, and that detectives had located several firearms, among other evidence related to the incident. The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old John Lapinski of Margate, per NBC News.
Moskowitz, who represents parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties, said he was notified about the threat the day before the general election. The Associated Press projected that Moskowitz, who is Jewish, won a second term on Tuesday.
“I am deeply worried about Congressional member security and the significant lack thereof when we are in the district,” Moskowitz said in a statement. “Regardless of our political affiliations or differences, we all have families we want to keep safe.”
The congressman said the man who was arrested was found carrying a manifesto that contained antisemitic rhetoric at the time of his arrest, which included a "target list" that only bore Moskowitz's name.
Police also said that the suspect was arrested for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and on other gun-related charges.
