A man stabbed a police officer at an apartment complex in Ashkelon early Tuesday morning in an attempted terror attack, Israel Police confirmed.

The officer was mid-operation when he noticed the man, who appeared suspicious to him. When the police officer performed a security check on him, the man pulled out a knife and attempted to stab the officer.

The officer responded quickly and shot the man, who died on the spot. The officer was lightly injured and evacuated to the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon.

The terrorist, from Hebron, was in his 40s. N12 noted that the attack was nationalistically since he was in Israel illegally.

The latest incident comes as Israel reels from a series of terror attacks that have left 14 civilians dead in the past three weeks.

Public Security Minister Omer Bar Lev expressed his appreciation to the injured Israel Police officer in a phone call between the two on Tuesday afternoon."You and all police officers form a protective wall against terrorism, the citizens of Israel trust you," the public security minister said. "You proved it by advancing [to neutralize the terrorist], even at the cost of risking your own life."
