Israel and Hamas Ceasefire Deal in Final Stages: Report

Protestors in Israel call for the release of hostages held by Hamas. Associated Press.

Israel and Hamas are close to finalizing a temporary ceasefire deal which could be announced as soon as Tuesday, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

In the first phase of the ceasefire, Hamas would release 33 hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and a temporary pause in fighting. After 16 days, parties would begin negotiations to potentially extend the pause into a permanent ceasefire.

Although negotiations could still break down, both sides remain optimistic.

An Israeli official said these were the most serious talks since the November 2023 hostage release deal.

Hamas said talks were in the “final stages” and that Mohammed Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, had agreed to the principles of the deal.

If negotiators agree to a deal, it will still need to be approved by Israel’s security cabinet and full government.
