Amid an unprecedented surge in illegal border crossings under the Biden administration, immigration has become the number one issue facing the United States for many American voters, according to a recent survey.

Thirty-five percent of respondents to a Harvard CAPS-Harris X poll indicated the issue was the top priority for the nation. A further 32% named inflation. Twenty-five precent pointed to the economy as ranking among their top issues. Crime and drugs tied with health care for fourth at 16%. The immigration figure surged 7% over the survey's previous iteration.

Inflation, however, remained the most important issue for voters on a personal level, with 38% naming it most important to themselves personally. Immigration placed second, with 17% in that category.

President Joe Biden, meanwhile, saw his approval rating tick down slightly from December, falling 1% to 42% approval. A further 57% disapproved of him. In a potential rematch with former President Donald Trump, Biden lost out with 41% to Trump's 48%, while 10% were unsure. When voters were forced to choose, Trump beat Biden 53% to 47%.

Conducted Jan. 17-18, the survey questioned 2,346 registered voters.
