(The Center Square) - The nation’s last uncalled congressional race finally ended in California 29 days after Election Day, leaving Republicans with a five-member majority in the House of Representatives.

Democrat Adam Gray narrowly defeated Congressman John Duarte, R-CA, in their second match-up. Gray, a former state assemblyman, currently has a less than 200 vote lead in California’s 13th Congressional District with nearly 211,000 ballots cast.

The rural and agricultural 13th Congressional District includes Merced County, most of the population of Madera County, and parts of Fresno, San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties.

“The final results confirm this district is ready for independent and accountable leadership that always puts the Valley's people ahead of partisan politics,” said Gray in a victory statement.

Duarte has run as a socially liberal Republican, voting against a Republican-led bill to ban Department of Defense funding for sex reassignment surgeries and gender hormone treatments for transgender individuals, and describing himself as “immigration fluid.”

Gray ran as a moderate Democrat, having supported local efforts in the area to become home to a Tesla Gigafactory.
