Three female suicide bombers targeted a wedding, a hospital, and a funeral during coordinated attacks in the northeastern Nigerian state of Borno on Sunday.
The initial incident occurred at 3 p.m. local time during a wedding in the city of Gwoza, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including a baby that the assailant was holding.
Several minutes later, another episode was reported at a local hospital, while a third explosion was detonated at the funeral services for the victims of the first attack.
The Borno State Emergency Management Agency identified 18 people killed and 48 injured in the terrorist acts.
While no group has taken responsibility for the bloodbath, suspicions lean toward the Islamic State-affiliated Boko Haram, as the jihadists have used kidnapped women to engage in similar actions in the past.
Boko Haram, like many other groups allied with the Islamic State, wants to create an Islamist government in the populous oil-rich nation.
