The Pentagon announced Monday that eight service members were injured in a Friday drone assault on a U.S. Central Command facility in Syria.

U.S. military spokesperson, Gen. Patrick Ryder, told reporters the victims were treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation, with three of the individuals being declared fit to return to work.

The incursion is believed to have been launched by a Tehran-backed militia that targeted the Rumalyn Landing Zone in the northeastern part of the country. Damage was reported to several structures in the compound.

The strike came as at least five members of the U.S. armed forces were injured in an August 5 rocket attack targeting the al Asad Air Base in Iraq. Allies of the Islamic Republic are also suspected of involvement in the bombardment.

The U.S. has approximately 900 personnel stationed in Syria acting in support of local Kurdish forces who are attempting to contain Islamic State activity.
