Israel Hayom reported on Tuesday that the Israeli U.N. delegation is actively working to counter an initiative proposed at the United Nations that refrains from categorizing anti-Zionism as a form of antisemitism.
According to the report, Miguel Moratinos, the U.N. High-Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations has been assigned the task of developing a comprehensive plan to combat antisemitism. However, Israel has expressed its concerns as Moratinos has been advocating for a more lenient definition of antisemitism, one that does not equate anti-Zionism with hatred towards Jews.
Israel's U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan is reportedly urging the U.N. to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. This definition considers any denial of Jewish sovereignty as an act of antisemitism. The IHRA request has already been accepted by numerous European countries, and the U.S. State Department.
The article stated that Ambassador Erdan, had a meeting with Moratinos two years ago, where the U.N. official gave the impression that he would support the accepted IHRA definition. However, Moratinos has reportedly changed his stance since then, neglecting consultations with Israel and independently promoting his own plan.
The article also reported that Ambassador Erdan briefed leaders of Jewish organizations on Thursday, highlighting the potential consequences of Moratinos' initiative.
