Ireland plans to join several other European Union members in recognizing a Palestinian state later this month, according to a report by RTÉ News.

Sources told the Irish news provider that May 21st is the planned day when Dublin will join Malta, Slovenia, and Spain in the announcement.

Malta, however, already established relations with Ramallah in 1988 and last month voted in the United Nations Security Council to approve the admission of the Palestinian delegation as a member.

In a joint statement on March 22, the four countries said that they have "agreed that the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region is through implementation of a two-state solution, with Israeli and Palestinian States living side-by-side, in peace and security."

The parties have been reportedly waiting on an anticipated U.N. General Assembly vote on Friday to demand full Palestinian participation in the world body before finalizing their decision.

Sweden is so far the only Western European E.U. nation to have established a formalized diplomatic accord with the entity's leadership.
