Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Announces Resignation

On Monday, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he would step down as his party’s leader.

Standing outside his home in Ottawa, Trudeau told reporters he was proud of his administration’s support for Ukraine and policies to fight climate change. But with his party trailing in the polls, it was time for a new leader.

“It has become obvious to me — with the internal battles — that I cannot be the one to carry the Liberal standard into the next election,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau led Canada’s Liberal Party for 11 years and has served as his country’s prime minister for 9. But his approval rating has steadily declined since 2023 and fell to a low of 22% in December.

Canada’s parliament will be suspended until March 24th, when lawmakers will meet to select a new prime minister. Trudeau will serve until then in a caretaker capacity.
