Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday invited sanctuary city mayors Muriel Bowser of Washington D.C, and Eric Adams of New York to visit his states border with Mexico.
Gov. Abbott wrote in a letter that was addressed to both of them “as Governor, I invite you to visit our border region to see firsthand the dire situation that only grows more urgent with each passing day, and to meet with the local officials, who like yourselves, realize this matter deserves immediate federal action".
Mayor Bowser has recently requested the National Guard to be deployed in her city, and Mayor Adams has requested from the Federal Government "financial and technical resources" to help with the influx of migrants that have been sent to their cities by Gov. Abbott, and Gov. Doug Ducey of Arizona.
Although traditionally the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, Gov. Abbott launched Operation Lone Star last year deploying thousands of National Guard members and Texas Department of Public Safety officers to address the drug and immigration crisis at the border.
Spokespersons for Bowser and Adams did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
