On Sunday, an advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader threatened to target Israeli embassies in reaction to last week’s attack on the regime’s diplomatic compound in Damascus.
Yahya Rahim Safavi told the state-funded ISNA news agency that “the embassies of the Zionist regime are no longer safe,” and Tehran viewed any efforts against them as a "legitimate and legal right."
The airstrike, suspected to have been carried out by Israel, eliminated seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps officers, including the organization’s Syrian chief, Gen. Mohammad Zahedi.
The preventive mission was reported to have taken place during a secret meeting with representatives from the Islamic Jihad terror group.
At Friday’s public funeral for the neutralized individuals, Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, the Iran regime’s most senior military officer, promised mourners that an incursion against the Jewish state “will be decided by us, in a way that makes Israel regret what it did.”
The comments come as two unnamed Islamic Republic officials told The New York Times that the regime has placed its military on high alert in response to the incident. The sources also confirmed that a decision was already made to forcefully retaliate for the action.
In response to the threats, Israel’s defense ministry released a Sunday statement assuring the public that they have "completed preparations for responses in the event of any scenario that may develop vis-à-vis Iran."
Last week’s security adjustments undertaken by Jerusalem have included the placing of air defense units on alert, reservist activations, cancelling leave for combat soldiers, and disrupting GPS capabilities throughout the country.
