A Taliban spokesperson in Kabul told The Associated Press Tuesday that the Islamist regime reopened their embassy in Oman on September 15.
The news outlet could not confirm the statement with Omani authorities but noted the rapprochement comes as Afghanistan’s rulers have been making efforts to gain international recognition, especially from regional governments.
Last month, the United Arab Emirates accepted the ambassadorial credentials of Badruddin Haqqani, the Taliban’s envoy to the oil-rich Persian Gulf state.
The action follows a decision by the leadership of the Central Asian nation earlier this summer to no longer recognize the diplomatic missions established by their Western-backed predecessors.
According to Afghan officials, 38 embassies and consulates are currently operating under Kabul’s control.
