The United Kingdom’s National Police Chief’s Council announced on Tuesday that authorities have now arrested more than 1,000 individuals during widespread anti-immigration riots that erupted last month.
The nationwide unrest follows the brutal knife murder of three young girls on July 29 during a dance event, which was allegedly carried out by the son of Rwandan immigrants in the seaside town of Southport.
The alleged attacker, U.K.-born Axel Rudakubana, injured two adults and eight other children during the incident.
Initial social media reports misidentified the 17-year-old as an asylum seeker with Islamist motivations behind the unprovoked bloodshed.
The civil disorder, blamed on provocation by nationalist groups, spread to cities throughout the country and even across the Irish Sea to Belfast.
Protesters have reportedly clashed with law enforcement personnel, ethnic minorities, and left-wing activists while damaging police stations, stores, mosques, and buildings suspected of housing migrants.
