Syria’s interim administration is preparing to disband the national security forces of ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad, according to a Wednesday report by Reuters.
In a statement sent to the news agency, rebel leader Abu Mohammad al-Golani confirmed the new government’s plan to replace the agencies that upheld the 50-year autocratic rule of the al-Assad family. This initiative will also include shutting down the detention centers which once housed many of the country’s political prisoners.
Alongside these changes to the national law enforcement structure, the 42-year-old head of the former Al Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham revealed he will offer amnesty to conscript soldiers who resisted his faction’s two-week march into Damascus.
Al-Golani also mentioned in his communication that he has been in talks with international organizations about overseeing the chemical weapons stockpiles maintained by the previous regime’s military. His militia has vowed not to deploy them under any circumstances.
