Two suspected Islamic State operatives were charged in Germany on Wednesday for allegedly conspiring to commit an act of terrorism in Stockholm’s government district in response to a series of Quran burning incidents in Sweden last year.

The two Afghan citizens, whose names were not released, were arrested in March while they were residing in the eastern city of Gera.

The charges against the defendants include criminal conspiracy, unlawful association with a prohibited organization, and violations of Germany’s Foreign Trade and Payments Act for purportedly raising funds for the Islamist group.

Prosecutors claim that the men received instructions from ISIS commanders in the summer of 2023 to "kill police and other people with firearms in the area around the Swedish parliament" and, in response, made “concrete preparations” to facilitate the plan.
