For the second time in his political career, Israel’s internal security service revealed that they had thwarted an attempt to assassinate the country’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir.
In a Thursday announcement, the Shin Bet stated that they have arrested a group of Arab-Israelis and Palestinians who were allegedly plotting to kill the 47-year-old leader of the Knesset's Otzma Yehudit party.
According to the agency, the suspects planned to carry out attacks against IDF facilities, Ben Gurion Airport, the government complex in Jerusalem, and the Judean hometown of the lawmaker, Kiryat Arba.
While planning the infiltration on Kiryat Arba, officials said that “there was even an intention to assassinate National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, by obtaining an RPG rocket in order to carry out the attack.”
One of the arrested was reported to be in contact with a Hamas operative in order to receive financing and logistical support for the mission.
Charges were filed at the Beersheba District Court.
