On Monday, Afghanistan's ruling regime expressed support for Saudi Arabia's move to reopen its embassy in Kabul, which had been closed in August 2021 following the Taliban's takeover of the country.

“We are optimistic about the possibility of strengthening relations and cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan through the resumption of these activities,” Afghan foreign ministry spokesperson Zia Ahmad said in a statement.

Riyadh's decision to renew diplomatic ties with the Islamist government was revealed on Sunday through an official post on X, declaring, “it has been decided to resume the activities of the mission of the Kingdom in Kabul starting on December 22.”

While no nation officially recognizes the Taliban as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan, several regional powers, including China, the Islamic Republic, Pakistan, and Russia, have taken steps toward bilateral engagement.
