The main Venezuelan opposition party, Voluntad Popular, announced that one of its senior members was abducted in the capital city of Caracas on Tuesday.
The political organization stated on X that Freddy Superlano, the group’s national coordinator, was detained by several hooded individuals and driven off in a light-colored SUV to an unknown location.
Superlano’s detention came several hours after the Organization of American States released a report criticizing the socialist administration of Nicolás Maduro over significant irregularities related to Sunday’s disputed presidential election.
Despite the OAS conclusion, the South American country’s government-controlled National Electoral Council determined that Maduro won the contest with 51 percent of the vote, while supporters of challenger Edmundo González claimed that their tallies show the incumbent’s performance at around 30 percent.
In addition to the apparent arrest of Superlano, Venezuela’s judicial authorities said that 749 individuals have been taken into custody in anti-regime protests since the polling ended.
