The Iranian missile attack on Israel has thrown the foreign aid debate to the forefront in Congress as House Speaker Johnson examines options for the path forward.
"The details of that package are being put together right now,” Johnson said Sunday on Fox News. “We’re looking at the options and all these supplemental issues.”
The GOP-led House has not yet voted on a Senate-passed foreign aid package that would provide $14 billion to Israel and $61 billion to Ukraine as well as funding for Taiwan and humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
The House previously voted on a standalone Israel funding bill with spending reductions taken from the addition Internal Revenue Service (IRS) funding in the Inflation Reduction Act. The bill was not put up for a vote in the Democratic-led Senate.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called the House to pass the Senate-passed bill.
"Extreme MAGA Republicans are out of excuses. The Ukrainian people are out of time," Jeffries wrote in a letter to his colleagues on Monday. "The gravely serious events of this past weekend in the Middle East and Eastern Europe underscore the need for Congress to act immediately."
Johnson's office was not available for comment on Monday about his next move on foreign aid.
A series of votes on Iran sanctions bills are scheduled for Monday, according to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La.
