With the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Mohammad Mokhber will take over as interim president until elections are held within 50 days.

Despite serving in about a dozen positions in the Iranian government, 68-year-old Mohkber has been in the shadows compared to other Iranian leaders before Raisi's death on Sunday, according to multiple news reports.

Mohkber, a member of the three-person council organizing the election, is also heavily involved in charities connected to the Iranian government. The U.S. Treasury Department under the Trump administration called these charities "opaque, quasi-official organizations generally controlled by current and former government officials and clerics that report directly to the Supreme Leader."

He has been sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for alleged human rights violations and involvement in nuclear activities, although he was later removed from the EU's sanction list.
