On Tuesday, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day temporary ceasefire deal proposed by the Trump administration. If Russia also accepts the American proposal, Russia and Ukraine would stop all fighting for 30 days and immediately begin negotiations over a permanent agreement to end the war.
After announcing the agreement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it is now on Russia to accept the proposal and allow the truce to begin.
“We will take this offer now to the Russians and we hope that they’ll say ‘yes,’” Sec. Rubio said. “The ball is now in their court.”
Ukraine initially proposed a partial ceasefire which would have stopped long-range missile and drone strikes and ended all attacks in the Black Sea.
The Trump administration’s proposal goes much further. If it goes into effect, Ukraine and Russia would halt all fighting along their entire 1,400 mile border.
Now both Ukraine and America must wait to see whether Russia will accept the proposed temporary ceasefire.
“We are ready to take such a step,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. “The United States of America must convince Russia to do this.”
