Pentagon officials announced Thursday that the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group has left the Middle East after an eight-month patrol culminating in the war-torn region.
The San Diego-based warship has been operating amid efforts by the U.S. military to counter the persistent attacks on merchant vessels by Yemen’s Houthi militia and deter the Islamic Republic from attacking Israel.
The redeployment leaves the USS Abraham Lincoln, currently stationed in the Gulf of Oman, as the remaining aircraft carrier in U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility.
The Abraham Lincoln joined the Theodore Roosevelt in late August, causing a significant amount of American firepower to be positioned simultaneously in a single theater of operations.
The destroyer, USS Daniel Inouye, is reportedly being sent back to its home port under the new orders as well.
