At least 150 projectiles were launched by Hezbollah militants towards Haifa on Sunday, the terror group’s most southern attack against Israel since the start of their October offensive against the northern communities of the Jewish state.
Israeli military officials reported that some of the munitions were intercepted by IDF air defense units, while others impacted near Kiryat Bialik. One seventeen-year-old was killed when the vehicle he was traveling in crashed after seeking refuge from incoming rocket fire, and three civilians were injured following a missile detonation near a residential building.
In a statement after the incident, Hezbollah announced the Tehran-backed militia was targeting the nearby Rafael Advanced Defense Systems facility in retaliation for last week's episode of exploding personal communication devices, widely purported to have been organized by Israel’s intelligence services, that caused the death of 30 of its members and wounded more than 2,800.
IDF spokesperson, Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, told AFP “hundreds of thousands of people had to take refuge in bomb shelters” because the longer-range incursion was directed at a large urban area.
In response to the barrages, the IDF stated they would be ordering a new series of airstrikes in Lebanon to destroy Hezbollah’s weapons infrastructure.
On Saturday, the IDF successfully eliminated hundreds of Hezbollah targets after fears arose that the terrorists were planning a major operation against Israel.
Israel’s Health Ministry on Sunday requested hospitals in the region transfer patients to secure locations and cancel elective procedures amid the increased security concerns that the bombardments are causing.
