Israeli media is reporting that security for the country’s Olympic delegation in Paris was increased on Wednesday due to concerns over reprisals for the recent eliminations of senior Hamas and Hezbollah officials.
The decision follows military operations on Tuesday, purportedly by the Jewish state, that resulted in the deaths of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah’s military leader, Fuad Shukr.
Israel’s Ynet News reported that the reinforcement will include providing the attendees with additional Shin Bet agents and local security officers who have already been accommodating the competitors and coaches with unprecedented protective measures.
Last week, media reports confirmed that several members of the Olympic team received threatening electronic communications that, in some instances, suggested participants would face a similar situation to the 11 Israeli athletes who were murdered by the Black September terrorist organization at the 1972 Summer Games in Munich.
