Emergency responders in the Philippines are relocating up to 87,000 individuals from several areas in the central region of the country following a volcanic eruption at Mount Kanlaon at 3:03 p.m. on Monday. This marked the second instance of serious seismic activity this year from the 8,000-foot peak located on the island of Negros.

During the four-minute event, volcanic ash and debris were carried over 120 miles westward, with plumes reaching approximately 2.5 miles high. The fallout impacted several municipalities, including Bago, Canlaon City, La Castellana, La Carlota, and Moises Padilla.

President Ferdinand Marcos reassured the affected population that the government is prepared to assist those displaced, confirming his administration is “ready to support the families who have been evacuated outside the 6-kilometer danger zone.”

While no fatalities have been reported so far, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has raised the national alert level, indicating "magmatic eruption has begun that may progress to further explosive eruptions."
