State media outlets in the Islamic Republic are reporting that Moscow is sending advanced air defense equipment to the regime’s armed forces as regional governments await any reprisal actions from the theocracy over last week’s assassination of a senior Hamas leader in Tehran.
The military assistance was reportedly requested by the country’s leadership as it prepares for a possible war with Israel over the July 31 elimination of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Hamas terrorist organization.
The Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, ordered his subordinates to formulate plans to strike directly at the Jewish state shortly after the incident.
The reports come amid Monday’s official visit to Iran’s capital by the Secretary of the Security Council of Russia and former Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, who held meetings with President Masoud Pezeshkian, the regime’s top general, Mohammad Bagheri, and his counterpart, Adm. Ali Akbar Ahmadian.
Although there has been no confirmation of what weapon systems the Kremlin provided, past arrangements between the two allies have included SU-35 fighter jets, attack helicopters, radar systems, and several generations of Russian long-range surface-to-air missiles.
Some Israeli news providers have speculated that Russia may have also supplied Tehran with examples of their hypersonic Iskander missiles.
Relations between the two countries have strengthened since the start of the 2022 war in Ukraine, including entering into negotiations to establish a major cooperation agreement this year.
