Saudi Arabia’s top general, Fayyad al-Ruwaili, made an official trip to the Islamic Republic’s Armed Forces General Staff Headquarters in Tehran on Sunday, according to the regime-controlled IRNA.
The chief of staff to the Kingdom’s military forces is reportedly leading a high-level delegation to meet with his counterpart, Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, to discuss bilateral defense cooperation among the two Persian Gulf nations.
Bagheri told the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Fars News Agency that he plans to invite the Saudi Arabian Navy to participate in joint exercises scheduled for next year.
The rare visit follows the restoration of formal relations between Riyadh and Tehran, ending a seven-year diplomatic interruption. The rapprochement was achieved through a 2023 agreement brokered by China.
