House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday announced that a 24-member bipartisan Task Force on Artificial Intelligence has been established to "explore how Congress can ensure America continues to lead the world in AI innovation while considering guardrails that may be appropriate to safeguard the nation against current and emerging threats."

Reps. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.) and Ted Lieu (D-Calif) will chair the task force, which will "produce a comprehensive report that will include guiding principles, forward-looking recommendations and bipartisan policy proposals developed in consultation with committees of jurisdiction."

Johnson and Jeffries each appointed 12 members.

In a statement, Johnson said AI advancements have the "potential to rapidly transform our economy and our society" and it is "important for Congress to work in a bipartisan manner to understand and plan for both the promises and the complexities of this transformative technology."

He said the task force will "ensure America continues leading in this strategic arena."

Jeffries said that Congress has a “responsibility to facilitate the promising breakthroughs that artificial intelligence can bring to fruition and ensure that everyday Americans benefit from these advancements in an equitable manner.”
