Four Israelis are dead and four more are injured after two Palestinian terrorists carried out a shooting attack Tuesday in a gas station near the village of Eli, located just north of the biblical city of Shiloh.

A civilian on the scene shot and killed one of the terrorists, but the other fled, the Israel Defense Forces said.

In addition to the four deceased victims, one person was seriously injured, two people suffered moderate injuries and another was mildly injured, Israel's ambulance service Magen David Adom said.

The IDF had constructed barriers in the area to search for the second suspect and a suspected terrorist infiltration alert sounded in Eli, forcing all residents to remain indoors. The alarm was lifted and Shin Bet, the Israel Security Agency, confirmed Tuesday evening that the second terrorist had been shot dead, per The Times of Israel.

Hamas, the U.S. State Department-designated terrorist organization that controls the Gaza Strip, said in a translated statement that it "blessed the heroic shooting operation."

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement also "blessed" the shooting, congratulated the terrorists and said the incident "falls within the context of exercising the legitimate right to self-defense."

Palestinian media identified the gunman who was killed on the scene as 26-year-old Muhannad Faleh Shehadeh. The identity of the second gunman is unclear.

The shooting comes as Israeli forces have been ramping up intense anti-terror operations in Palestinian towns in the West Bank.

The victims have not been identified, but 25 Israelis have been killed in terrorist attacks so far in 2023.
