On Thursday, Japanese police arrested 53-year-old Shinobu Sekiguchi in connection with a ramming attack on the Israeli embassy in Tokyo. A local police officer who was on a protection detail was reported to have been injured when the driver attempted to breach a security barrier.
The only details that authorities released about the suspect were that the individual was a member of a 'right-wing' organization.
Gilad Cohen, Israel's ambassador to Japan, released a statement on social media thanking the police for their assistance, and saying that he was 'shocked' by the situation.
The embassy has been subject to anti-Israel demonstrations critical of Jerusalem's military response to the Oct. 7 Hamas led invasion of southern Israel. These protests have resulted in the Japanese government increasing security in the immediate area.
The incursion of the diplomatic property was not the first time that the Israeli foreign service has been subject to confrontation in Asia. On Oct. 13, a staff member of the county's embassy in Beijing was hospitalized after being assaulted while walking near his place of work.
