An object described as a hand grenade was discovered in the perimeter of the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm on Wednesday. The device was reported to Swedish authorities, who later announced that it was destroyed by the national bomb squad.

Israel’s Ambassador to Sweden, Ziv Nevo Kulman, thanked the responding security officials for their quick reaction to the situation and described the event as “an attempted terror attack.”

Declaring "an attempted attack on an embassy is an attack both on those who work there and on Sweden," Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson assured Israeli diplomats his country would investigate "who is or who are responsible."

Kristersson also stated that the police will increase their presence around Jewish institutions throughout the Scandinavian nation in light of the circumstances.

No organization has claimed responsibility for the action.

The intrusion comes at a time when the foreign ministry in Israel has placed their diplomatic detachments on heightened alert since the Oct. 7 invasion of southern Israel by members of the Hamas terrorist organization.

Earlier this month, Jerusalem announced its intelligence agencies had obtained information that Hamas cells in Europe were planning attacks on Jewish targets throughout Europe.

Other security-related incidents at or near Israeli embassies since October include the public assault of a foreign ministry employee in China, a car-ramming attack in Japan, and the detonation of a bomb in India.
