Wafiq Safa, the head of Hezbollah’s Liaison and Coordination Unit, arrived in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, according to a report by Reuters.
The envoy’s trip, the first official visit by a Hezbollah representative, was reportedly prompted by UAE officials.
Safa, who is under personal sanction by the United States, was said to be in the country to secure the release of six Lebanese citizens who are currently incarcerated for providing support to the Iran-backed organization. Several of the individuals are reported to be serving life sentences.
Hezbollah sources told the news agency that the purpose of the visit was to institute a "new page" in the relations between Abu Dhabi and the Western designated terror group.
In 2019, the UAE, which was previously a rival of the Islamic Republic, started rebuilding relations with Tehran. This ongoing diplomatic initiative could be seen as an attempt to continue the relaxation of tensions.
