The United Nations Security Council has scheduled an admission vote for a Palestinian state on Friday, according to a report by Reuters.
The 15-member committee will reportedly decide at 3 p.m. on a resolution, introduced by Algeria, that would recommend to the U.N. General Assembly that "the State of Palestine be admitted to membership of the United Nations."
Even if the measure gathers the nine votes needed for passage, the proposal could be negated by a veto from China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, or the United States.
The U.S. is expected to use its veto, as the country has long maintained that Palestinian statehood should only come after a permanent peace agreement is established with Israel.
"We do not see that doing a resolution in the Security Council will necessarily get us to a place where we can find a two-state solution moving forward," said Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the organization's U.S. representative.
On Wednesday, Axios reported that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas rejected a request by the Biden administration to not move forward with the possible affiliation.
The suggestion by the White House was probably initiated to shield President Biden from having to defend the anticipated veto from angry Democratic voters in the upcoming U.S. presidential elections in November.
