Armenia announced on Friday that it will recognize a Palestinian state, joining several other countries that have made such a decision in the wake of the October war in Gaza.
"Confirming its commitment to international law and the principles of equality, sovereignty, and peaceful coexistence of peoples, the Republic of Armenia recognizes the State of Palestine," the Armenian government said in a statement.
Israel’s foreign ministry reacted to the resolution by summoning the country’s ambassador for official censure, as the Jewish state maintains that such a measure should only be taken after a negotiated peace settlement is made with Ramallah.
The new policy comes as earlier this month the Slovenian Parliament voted 52-0 to grant full diplomatic recognition to the Palestinian Authority, a move that followed similar actions by Norway, Ireland, and Spain several weeks prior.
Relations between the two states have been strained recently over Jerusalem’s bilateral cooperation with Azerbaijan.
