Israel to Conscript 3,000 Haredi Soldiers After Supreme Court Voids Long Held Exemptions: Report

Israel’s military authorities submitted a proposal on Monday to conscript 3,000 members of the country’s Haredi community, according to a report by i24.

The Israeli television channel said that the decision follows a unanimous Supreme Court ruling last month that struck down a longstanding exemption for the religiously observant citizens that had been in place since the country’s founding.

Haredi soldiers currently serve on a volunteer basis in the IDF, and the recent adjudication is expected to increase the total recruitment pool of eligible candidates to 63,000.

The new policy comes as Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told a Knesset committee last week that the IDF needs 10,000 more soldiers to maintain its operations against Hamas and Hezbollah.
