The French interior minister said on Saturday that he could not exclude foreign actors from involvement in several arson-related sabotage incidents that damaged cables and signal substations along portions of the country’s high-speed rail network the previous day.
The early morning attack disrupted travel to Paris before the Opening Ceremonies of the 2024 Olympic Summer Games. The incursion caused travel cancellations and delays for many spectators who were planning to attend the inauguration of the international competition.
One effort to obstruct the Paris-Marseille line was reportedly foiled by France’s national railroad company.
Two security sources told Reuters that although no organization has claimed responsibility for the actions, initial suspicions have fallen on leftist or environmental activists.
Traffic on the affected lines is expected to return to normal by Monday.
