The Islamic Republic’s new president warned Israel against taking any action against Hezbollah militants in response to a Saturday rocket attack that killed 12 Druze children during a soccer match in the Golan Heights.
In a Monday phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly said that any attempt by Jerusalem to respond to the incident that occurred in the town of Majdal Shams “could backfire and have severe consequences for the Zionists themselves.”
While Hezbollah’s leadership has denied that they fired the projectile, IDF spokesperson Adm. Daniel Hagari said shortly after the explosion that the munition involved in the fatal episode was an Iran-manufactured Falaq missile.
Weapons supplied to Hezbollah by the regime in Tehran have been used extensively in the terrorist organization’s almost 10-month-long effort to attack civilian and military targets in northern Israel in what the militia’s commanders say is a solidarity campaign in support of Hamas’s fighters in Gaza.
Pezeshkian’s comments come as an Israeli diplomatic source told Reuters that the Jewish state is planning on taking limited measures against Hezbollah in the coming days and that they are confident the operation will "not lead to an all-out war."
