Myanmar’s military government announced Thursday that they will be extending the country’s state of emergency for an additional six months. The continuation of their administration is the eighth time that they have stated their intention to remain in control.
State-run media reported that although the junta is committed to allowing elections next year, a postponement is needed "to restore peace and stability because of ongoing terrorist activities" and "in order to prepare valid and accurate ballots."
The decision comes as the governing authorities, who came to power in a 2021 coup, have been faced with widespread armed opposition to their three-and-a-half-year rule.
Last week, the leaders of the Southeast Asian nation transferred all presidential responsibilities to General Min Aung Hlaing after the incumbent was placed on prolonged medical leave.
