A suicide bomber and several gunmen murdered at least 32 and wounded 60 in an attack at a beach resort in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Friday evening.

Local police said that the incursion began after the explosive device was detonated in a Lido Beach restaurant, followed by four armed militants shooting into the panicked crowd as survivors rushed out of the building.

One of the perpetrators was reported to have been captured after the incident, while the other participants were eliminated by security forces during a four-hour confrontation that followed.

The al-Shabab terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the bloodbath, asserting that the death toll was higher than official estimates.

Al-Shabab, an ally of al-Qaeda, maintains control of areas in southern and central Somalia and is determined to overthrow the internationally recognized government in the African country.

In January, the militant group captured a United Nations helicopter with nine passengers on it, and in July, they killed five individuals in a car bombing in Mogadishu.
