United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned G7 foreign ministers that an attack on Israel by the Islamic Republic may happen in the coming days, according to a report by Axios.
Three sources told the news outlet that during a Sunday phone call with his international counterparts, Blinken attempted to coordinate a last-minute effort to prevent the altercation by asking attendees to place diplomatic pressure on Tehran and its regional partners to temper any belligerent plans that they may have against the Jewish state.
In addition to wanting to limit the scope of any intervention targeting Israeli territory, Blinken reportedly told participants that the Biden administration will work to restrain Jerusalem from taking any reprisals against the operation.
Axios reported that during the meeting, the Secretary could not provide any information regarding a specific timeline for a possible incursion and said that U.S. intelligence officials were unaware of what form of retaliatory measures would be employed.
Blinken’s comments come as the Iran regime has stated that they intend to retaliate for the last week's assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Hamas terrorist organization.
Haniyeh was eliminated in an explosion while he was residing at a government guesthouse in the Iranian capital while on an official visit to attend the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
On Monday, the top U.S. military commander in the Middle East, Gen. Michael Kurilla, arrived in Israel for meetings with IDF leadership to discuss the area's security situation.
