Houthi rebels in Yemen announced Saturday that they attacked a Liberia-flagged container ship for the second time in August.
In the Friday incident, two projectiles reportedly exploded near the M/V Groton while it was traveling 150 miles east of Aden. The vessel faced a similar incursion from the Tehran-backed militia on August 3, causing it to sustain minor damage above its waterline.
No injuries to the crew members or structural impediments to the ship were reported in the Houthi’s most recent effort.
The altercation comes as salvage operations are underway for a Greek-flagged oil tanker that has been on fire in the Red Sea since August 23, after the Houthis assaulted the petroleum carrier and detonated incendiary munitions on its deck.
The Islamists have targeted more than 80 commercial vessels in the area with drones, missiles, and exploding watercraft, revealing the group’s intention to disrupt the region’s oceangoing traffic in what their spokespersons claim is an act of solidarity with Hamas terrorists in Gaza.
