On Wednesday, the Oversight Board of Meta Platforms announced that a contentious phrase frequently used by pro-Palestinian advocates should not be automatically removed from their sites, despite claims that it incites violence against Jewish individuals.

The tech conglomerate's internal moderation authority said the posting of the expression “From the River to the Sea” is contextual in nature, and therefore it should not always be construed as being antisemitic or violent.

The slogan, often heard at anti-Israel demonstrations, refers to the land area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

Opponents of its use maintain that it is a call for the forceful expungement of Israel and the removal of Jewish culture from the region.

The decision was strongly criticized by the World Jewish Congress, which called the words “inherently genocidal,” while the Anti-Defamation League noted the proclamation “denies the right of the State of Israel to exist.”
