Russian Government Supplied Houthis with Ship Targeting Data: Report

Russia provided targeting data for the Houthi militia in Yemen for use in attacking the region’s commercial shipping, according to a Thursday report by The Wall Street Journal.

Three Western defense sources told the American newspaper that the Islamic Republic-backed militants started receiving the assistance late last year. This occurred when local members of the Iran regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps passed Russian satellite observations to their Yemeni allies.

The intelligence given to the Houthis has contributed to the increase in their year-long terrorist activities directed at merchant vessels navigating the crucial trade routes in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

“For Russia, any flare up anywhere is good news, because it takes the world’s attention further away from Ukraine and the U.S. needs to commit resources—Patriot systems or artillery shells—and with the Middle East in play, it’s clear where the U.S. will choose,” Alexander Gabuev, the Director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, explained to the news outlet.

Spokespersons for the Islamist group have described their efforts as acts of solidarity with Hamas operatives fighting Israeli forces in Gaza.
