Germany recalled its ambassador to the Islamic Republic on Tuesday in response to the previous day’s execution of Iranian-German Jamshid Sharmahd.

Along with the removal of Ambassador Markus Potzel, authorities in Berlin also requested a meeting with the regime’s envoy to the Central European country to convey “our sharp protest” over “the murder” of their citizen.

“We have sent our strongest protest against the actions of the Iranian regime and reserve the right to take further action,” a spokesperson for the German foreign ministry posted on the social media platform X.

State broadcasters in the Islamic Republic reported Monday that Sharmahd was executed earlier in the morning after being convicted on a charge of “corruption on Earth” related to “planning and orchestrating a series of terrorist acts.”

The Los Angeles resident and CEO of a software company was arrested by regime agents in Dubai in 2020 while on a business trip to India. Prosecutors in the theocracy claimed he was responsible for a 2008 bombing at a mosque in Shiraz, which resulted in 14 fatalities and over 200 injuries.

Sharmahd and his family members firmly denied the accusations, asserting that Tehran's motivation for pursuing the legal case was to punish the 69-year-old for his prominent dissident activities.

Sharmahd’s abduction, detention, trial, and sentencing have also been condemned by the European Union, the United States, and many human rights organizations.
