Four defendants were sentenced to death by a revolutionary court in the Iranian city of Urmia for allegedly conducting espionage activities for Israel, according to a Wednesday bulletin from the Fars News Agency.
The Islamic Republic-controlled media outlet said three of the unnamed individuals were found guilty of aiding the Jewish state’s intelligence services in the November 2020 assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the purported director of the regime’s nuclear program.
Although Jerusalem has never formally acknowledged responsibility for the operation that targeted the 59-year-old senior scientist, a 2021 report from The Jewish Chronicle cited Mossad sources confirming their involvement in the incident.
When asked about the judicial decision, an Israeli government spokesperson told The Times of Israel, “We never comment on such matters. There has been no change in our position.”
Israel has been accused by officials in Tehran of killing at least four other technical personnel suspected of being involved in the theocracy's illicit atomic research.
